Ethernet

Ethernet is a wired network connection, usually provided through an RJ-45 LAN port. Product listings may show whether the port exists and which Ethernet data rates it supports.

What Ethernet means

Ethernet is a wired local-area network connection. On DockFit product pages, it is commonly represented by an Ethernet LAN (RJ-45) port, which lets a compatible product connect to a wired network through an Ethernet cable.

A product may list Ethernet LAN: Yes or Ethernet LAN: No. Some listings also show Ethernet LAN data rates such as 10, 100, 1000, or 2500 Mbit/s. These numbers describe the rates the product is advertised as supporting; they are not a guarantee of the speed you will experience.

Why it matters on DockFit products

Ethernet can matter when a wired network connection is more suitable for your setup than a wireless connection. It is especially relevant when checking whether a dock, adapter, or other network-capable product has the physical LAN connection you need.

If a product lists one Ethernet LAN port, that indicates the number of listed RJ-45 network ports. It does not describe the quality of the connection, the speed of the wider network, or the performance of every connected device.

What the specification does not tell you

An Ethernet capability flag is not a quality rating. Ethernet LAN: Yes confirms a listed capability, but it does not by itself establish:

  • The negotiated connection speed in your particular network
  • The capabilities of the router, switch, cable, or connected device
  • Whether a listed rate is available under every operating condition
  • Cable requirements beyond any details the product page explicitly provides
  • Other networking features that are not listed

A product may also identify copper Ethernet cabling technology, such as 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, or 1000BASE-T. Treat that as an additional specification rather than a general performance claim.

What to check on a product page

Look for the following details:

  • Whether Ethernet LAN is listed as Yes or No
  • The number of Ethernet LAN (RJ-45) ports
  • The stated Ethernet LAN data rates
  • Any listed copper Ethernet cabling technology
  • Whether the product page gives separate details about the network connection, cable, or supported standards

If the page only shows that Ethernet is present, the exact supported rates and other connection details remain unknown. If it lists several rates, read them as the advertised set of supported rates, not as a promise that the connection will always operate at the highest number.

Nearby concepts include Wi-Fi, USB, and Thunderbolt, which may provide other ways to connect or expand a product but are not the same as Ethernet.
