DP 2.1
What DP 2.1 means
DP 2.1 means DisplayPort 2.1, a revision of the DisplayPort connection standard. On a monitor or other display, it usually describes a DisplayPort input or output intended to follow that version of the interface specification.
The standard concerns how a source device and display exchange video and audio signals. It can be relevant to high-resolution or high-refresh display setups, but the DP 2.1 label alone does not state the resolution, refresh rate, color format, compression, or bandwidth available on a particular product.
Why it matters on DockFit
DP 2.1 may matter when you are matching a display with a newer graphics card, computer, dock, or other video source. It can help identify the generation of the wired display connection, but the practical result depends on both devices, the selected link mode, the cable, and the product’s stated implementation.
For a careful comparison, treat DP 2.1 as a connectivity capability rather than a picture-quality rating. A display with DP 2.1 is not automatically brighter, sharper, faster, or better calibrated than one with another DisplayPort version.
What the label does not tell you
A DP 2.1 listing does not, by itself, confirm:
- The maximum supported resolution or refresh rate
- The exact DisplayPort link rate or bandwidth mode
- Whether UHBR modes are supported
- Whether Display Stream Compression (DSC) is used or available
- Which cable is included or required
- Whether all advertised display modes work through a dock, adapter, or USB-C connection
- Whether other DP 2.1 features are present on every port
DP 2.1 is therefore a capability flag, not proof of a particular performance level. Even where the label is accurate, the product page may need to provide additional details before you can determine the supported setup.
What to check on a product page
Look for the number and type of DisplayPort connections, the stated input version, supported resolutions and refresh rates, and any listed bandwidth or UHBR information. Also check whether the specification refers to a native DisplayPort socket or to video carried through USB-C.
If a page only says “DP 2.1” without further figures, those missing details remain unknown. Do not treat the label as confirmation that every optional DisplayPort 2.1 feature is included.
Nearby concepts include DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, USB-C, UHBR, and DSC.
