DisplayPort Alt Mode
What DisplayPort Alt Mode means
DisplayPort Alt Mode, often called DP Alt Mode, allows a compatible USB-C port to carry a DisplayPort video signal. On a dock, this commonly refers to sending video from a laptop or other host device through the dock to a connected display.
The USB-C connector alone does not confirm support. The host device, dock input, cable, and display output path must all support the required video connection.
Why it matters on DockFit
This specification can determine whether a USB-C dock can receive video from your device without relying on a separate HDMI or DisplayPort connection. It is especially relevant when comparing docks that use USB-C as their upstream connection.
A DisplayPort Alt Mode label tells you that the capability is present, but it does not describe the quality of the implementation. It does not, by itself, confirm a particular resolution, refresh rate, number of displays, or multi-monitor arrangement.
What the label does not tell you
DisplayPort Alt Mode is a capability flag, not a quality grade. It does not prove that:
- Every USB-C port on the product supports video
- The dock supports a specific resolution or refresh rate
- One host can drive multiple displays
- The included cable supports the same video mode
- A connected laptop supports DisplayPort video over USB-C
- The dock's other video outputs can use the full capability of the upstream connection
Product pages may list video limits separately. If those details are absent, the supported display configuration stays unknown rather than being implied by the Alt Mode label.
What to check on a product page
Check which port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and whether it is the dock's host-facing USB-C port or a downstream USB-C port. Then look for separate information about supported display outputs, resolutions, refresh rates, multi-display support, operating-system requirements, and the included cable.
Also check the source device's specifications. A USB-C port may support charging or data without supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode. Nearby terms such as USB-C, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, and MST may describe related parts of the connection, but they are not interchangeable proof of every feature.
When a product page only says “DisplayPort Alt Mode” without further video specifications, treat the video capability as present but the exact performance and compatibility as unconfirmed.
